Mr Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker of the House of Representatives has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly is committed to their welfare.
Tambuwal gave the assurance on Friday at the presentation of the mid-term report of the member representing Idemili North and South Federal constituency, Mr Charles Odedo at Nnobi in Anambra.
He said that the National Assembly demonstrated this through the laws made for the good governance of the country as well as the constituency and social projects initiated by members .
“The members of the House of Representatives live together as one large family for the common interest of Nigerians irrespective party platforms,” Tambuwal said.
He commended Odedo for his initiative which favoured education, saying education through scholarships remained a major contribution to the development of human society.
Tambuwal extolled the leadership qualities of Odedo, describing him as a “vibrant member of the green chamber in whom we are well pleased”.
The Speaker handed out Odedo’s donation of N50 million in cheques to the 300 beneficiaries in both secondary and tertiary institutions drawn from the 17 communities in the federal constituency.
In his speech Odedo said he decided to embark on the scholarship programme because he observed that students in secondary and tertiary institutions in the state paid the highest school fees in Nigeria.
“Teachers are also poorly remunerated,” he said.
Odedo said that the N100,000 given to each beneficiary in tertiary institutions was to help alleviate their sufferings and pay their session fees which he put at about N140,000 a year.
The lawmaker also said that it was pitiable to see some of the students staying at home because they could not pay their school fees.
He disclosed the committee set up to select the beneficiaries ensured at least two indigent undergraduates and eight secondary school students were selected from the 17 communities in the constituency.
Odedo urged the people to vote his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Senator Chris Ngige who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, described Tambuwal as a “leader with sound qualities” while describing Odedo as a “frontline politician.”
Ngige, the flag bearer of APC in the Nov. 16 election in the state, commended Odedo’s initiative, saying the people of his constituency reposed a lot of confidence in him.
