Jose Mourinho has warned his players that there is “no place to hide” and called on them to prove they are “men and not kids” as the Manchester United manager faces worsening problems in his bid to halt the club’s alarming slide.
United’s embarrassing 4-0 defeat by Chelsea on Mourinho’s first return to Stamford Bridge since he was sacked by the club has left the Portuguese with one win in his past six Premier League games and piled on the pressure ahead of their daunting EFL Cup fourth round tie at home to Manchester City on Wednesday.
After seeing his side fall five points adrift of the Champions League places and six behind league leaders during a period in which they have faced Liverpool and Chelsea away from home, Mourinho has told his squad there is no margin for error ahead of a critical run of fixtures.
United are at home to Burnley on Saturday, by which time their troubles could have deepened with defeat to City, and then face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium before Arsenal visit Old Trafford on November 19.
“We are really, really sad but again this is not a situation for kids, this is for men and tomorrow, we have to be men and work for the next one,” Mourinho said.
“I would prefer to play in the Premier League (next than in the EFL Cup). It’s a bad feeling in the Premier League. With the combination of results, the gap to the top is six points. We’ve had a very difficult period of matches. We lost points this week and even in the match when we played phenomenally against Stoke, we lost points then”.
