The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday said that telecommunications operators engaged in 29,515 Mobile Number Porting (MNP) activities in the month of January 2016.
This is contained in the `Incoming and Outgoing Porting Activities of Mobile Network Operators’ report in Lagos.
The report showed that there was a decrease of 5,985 in the MNP activities in the month of January 2016, in contrast to 35,500 activities recorded in December 2015.
It said out of the 29,515 porting activities recorded in the month under review, 14,648 were incoming porting activities, while 14,867 were outgoing.
The report indicated in the outgoing table that telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, lost 8,430 customers to other networks through the MNP activities in January.
According to the report, MTN is followed by Airtel Nigeria, which lost 4,396 subscribers in the month under review.
It said that Globacom lost 1,065 customers, while 976 subscribers of Etisalat Nigeria ported to other networks in the period under review.
In the incoming table, the report showed that Etisalat enjoyed the exercise the most as it led with an additional 6,329 customers on its network in January.
It stated that Airtel came second on the gainers’ list, as it added 5,280 subscribers to its customer strength.
The report stated that on the gainers’ list, 2,589 subscribers moved into Globacom network, while MTN Nigeria gained 450 customers in the month under consideration.
The exercise was flagged off on April 22, 2013 by the NCC with the aim of deepening competition in the industry.
