The National Emergency Maternal and Child Health Intervention Centre ( NEMCHIC) has urged Bauchi State Government to implement the 10-year Human Resource for Health (HRH) Strategic Plan to mitigate maternal and child mortality.

The NEMCHIC Team Lead, Dr Tafida Mamman, made the call at a news conference in Bauchi on Monday.

He said implementing the plan would help to address the challenges of inadequate skilled manpower and the lack of essential drugs, which hindered access to primary healthcare in the state.

He said “we want to appeal to the state government to implement the 10-year strategic plan for HRH to enhance healthcare delivery.

“The state should ensure that Primary Health Care facilities have ideal health workers in terms of adequate size, skills, competence, motivation, mix and equally distributed by cadre and geography.

“This will save the lives of mothers and children and improve human capital development.”

The team lead said NEMCHIC was established to improve awareness and enhance community involvement to reduce maternal and child mortality.

He explained that the center, in collaboration with development partners, also train stakeholders in the Human Centre Design (HCD) component of the Smiles for Mothers Program, aimed at reducing Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH).

“We train stakeholders on the values of HCD and its role in improving public health outcomes, using a combination of field activities and in-class training sessions.

“The training participants, now referred to as HCD Champions, include representatives from the Directorate of Public Health and pharmaceutical services.

“Others are from nursing services, maternal and child health departments across the state.
