A 26-year-old man, Solomon Bernard, was on Friday arraigned in a Benin Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing his grandmother over issues bordering on inheritance.
The prosecutor, Mr Sunday Lucky, said that the offence contravened Section 319 (a) of the Criminal Code, which provides that anyone found guilty shall be sentenced to death.
Lucky told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 20, at No. 13, Igunbo St., Benin City.
He said that the accused killed his maternal grandmother, Mrs Janet Ogbeifun, with a cutlass over storey building inheritance.
The plea of the accused person was, however, not taken.
The Magistrate, Mrs Taiye Omoruyi, said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case, and ordered that the accused be remand in prison custody.
Omoruyi also ordered that the case file should be duplicated and send to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
She adjourned the case till February 8, 2016.
