The crisis between former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and his successor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has deepened.
Thugs suspected to be loyal to some Ganduje’s aides, on Saturday, attacked scores of Kwankwaso’s supporters wearing their trademark red caps.
Venue was the Hawan Daushe Durbar in Kano.
Ganduje was Kwankwaso’s deputy but since he handed over to the governor on May 29, 2015, the crisis between the duo on who controls Kano politics started.
It is believed that the 2019 general election is at the centre of the crisis.
Kwankwaso’s brother, Yahaya, was beaten mercilessly.
Also attacked were former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Rabiu Bichi; former Chief of State to Kwankwaso, Yunusa Adamu Dangwani; former Commissioner for State Affairs, Aminu Abdulsalam and former Commissioner of Lands, Yusuf Dambatta.
Sympathisers were seen rushing them to hospitals.
The Durbar, with its traditional horse riders, usually attracts global spectators.
Kwankwaso’s supporters came in several buses and cars to pay homage to the Emir.
As soon as they alighted, the thugs descended on them.
A witness said: “Of course, the attack was planned. The idea was that no supporter of Kwankwaso must be seen wearing the red cap. But, they came in their hundreds and this infuriated the thugs. That was why they were attacked. You can see blood everywhere.”
Some Kwankwaso’s loyalists later stormed the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano and private hospitals to sympathise with the victims.
