Lagos Taskforce Breaks Silence on BRT Drama, Calls Out Misleading Viral Video

The Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce), Mr Adetayo Akerele, has reassured Lagos residents of the agency’s continued commitment to maintaining safety, environmental sanitation, and traffic order.

Speaking at a quarterly media briefing in Oshodi, Akerele addressed concerns surrounding enforcement activities, particularly along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors.

He clarified that the taskforce is often wrongly associated with the responsibilities of other agencies, especially in matters relating to BRT enforcement.

According to him, the regulations guiding the BRT lanes are designed to protect the general public, ensuring safer and more efficient transportation across Lagos.

Akerele also responded to a viral video shared by an online television platform, which alleged that taskforce officials unlawfully seized a vehicle and drove against traffic.

He explained that an internal investigation revealed the video to be misleading, noting that the vehicle had been impounded for violating traffic laws and that the driver attempted to evade arrest.

The chairman further criticised the platform for allegedly trying to use its influence to pressure the agency, stressing that such actions undermine professionalism and public trust.

He urged journalists and media organisations to prioritise fact-checking before publishing reports that could damage the reputation of institutions.

Addressing allegations of extortion, Akerele maintained that the taskforce operates strictly within legal limits and remains committed to transparency and accountability.

He also announced that the Lagos State Government would resume its monthly voluntary sanitation exercise in April, aimed at improving environmental cleanliness and public health.

Akerele called for stronger collaboration between residents, the media, and government agencies to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more orderly Lagos.
