A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 24-year-old labourer, Sani Musa, to three months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone and N35 cash.
The Judge, Mr Garba Ogbede, who sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty, gave him an option to pay a fine of N3,000.
Ogbede warned Musa to be of good behaviour and desist from committing crimes after serving out his punishment.
He also ordered that the recovered phone and the N35 be returned to the owner.
Musa of Lugbe Central Mosque, by Car wash, Airport Road, was convicted for criminal trespass, house breaking and theft.
The First Information Report (FIR) stated that Perpetua Ibezimakar of Aco Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, reported the matter at the Iddo Police station on March 6.
Prosecuting Counsel Aderonke Imana had informed the court that Musa criminally trespassed into the complainant premises on March 6.
Imana said that the convict entered the complainant house through the ceiling at about 4.30 p.m. and made away with her Samsung phone and N35.
She said the convict was caught with the phone, and during the police interrogation, the convict admitted the offence.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 348, 342 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The convict admitted committed the offence and begged the court for leniency.
He pleaded with the court, saying “I am sorry for what I did; it was hunger that led me into this act; I have never stolen in my life.
“Boko Haram killed my parent and I have no one to help me please have mercy on me sir,’’ Musa said.
