The Kremlin has firmly rejected accusations that Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, was poisoned in a prison camp two years ago.
“Of course, we do not accept such accusations, we do not agree with them, we consider them biased and unfounded,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Russian news agency Interfax on Monday.
Russian authorities maintained that Navalny died of natural causes.
His body was not released for several days in spite of requests from his mother, raising fears that any traces of poison could disappear.
It remained unclear how Navalny’s tissue samples reached laboratories in the West.
Monday marks the second anniversary of Navalny’s death in prison.
On Saturday, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Navalny’s widow Yulia Navalnaya and Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, said laboratory results indicated that Navalny was killed with a toxin derived from a poison dart frog.
In addition to Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom have backed the findings.
Wadephul said he was shocked by the results and argued that only the Russian state had the means and opportunity to poison the opposition figure.
Many people, including his mother, have sought to pay their respects at his grave at Borisovskoye Cemetery in the Russian capital.
