In its efforts towards contributing to a more peaceful
and sustainable community, the Justice, Development and Peace Movement (JDPM), an arm of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, has provided economic empowerment to 200 women.
The beneficiaries were drawn from 14 local governments in Oyo, Ogbomoso and Oke-Ogun areas of Oyo State.
The programme was aimed at enhancing economic activities of the women who are parents and guardians and
will in turn support their children , as well as contribute to
building a culture of respect for child rights.
They were trained on entrepreneurship and business management, after which N10,000 was given to each of the beneficiaries as non refundable grants.
After close monitoring and satisfactory performances, the initial grant was increased with N5,000 per beneficiary.
The women from each of the three zones are also to benefit from issuance of business tool kits free of charge.
The first batch of beneficiaries from the four local governments in Oyo metropolis were, at the weekend, presented with business tool kits.
At the colourful event held within the JDPM premises
located at Mabolaje in Oyo town, the Assistant Coordinator of JDPM, Rev. Father Paul Oshin, lamented how many parents abuse their childern because they are poor.
He said the movement would not relent in its efforts in promoting cordial social relations among school pupils, adding that awareness of children’s rights have been spread to religious leaders and other interest groups to increase their sensibility.
Father Oshin, was, however, hopeful that the beneficiaries would utilise knowledge acquired judiciously in managing their businesses.
Two of the beneficiaries, Mrs Idowu Ojo and Eze Florence, expressed appreciation to JDPM for its unflinching
commitment towards improving socio economic status of women.
