INEC registers 1,924,072 voters for Edo election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday in Benin said that a total of 1,924,072 eligible voters registered for the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) ahead of the September 10 governorship elections.

INEC National Commissioner, Dr Muhammed Lecky, disclosed this at the Publication and Presentation of official Register of Voters (RV) to political parties’ candidates.

Lecky said that a total of 136,038 voters were registered during the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise which took place between June 22 and June 26.

He said a total of 132,559 of voters attempted multiple registration, while a total of 494 voters participated in the Continuous Voters Register (CVR).

He said in line with Section 20 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), provides that the Register of Voters for an election shall be issued not less than thirty days before such an election.

The National Commissioner said INEC would take the lives of its ad-hoc staff, voters , local and international observers, international and local journalists on duties very seriously during the elections.

In his remarks, the Commissioner of police in Edo, Mr Chris Ezike, assured electorates of safety environment during and after the elections.

Ezike said the police and other sister agencies would ensure an enabling environment for free, fair and credible elections.
