Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday created a Virtual Reality (VR) computing division and made Mr Clay Bavor, the executive running its product management team.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Joshua Cruz, Google’s spokesman, in Lagos.

“As Vice President of product management, Bavor will oversee some of Google’s key apps, including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs,’’ it said.

The statement said Bavo’s earlier role would now be taken over by Senior Vice President Ms Diane Greene.

It added that Google had been flirting with virtual reality, but never quite fully dived into it until now.

According to the statement, in 2015, the company announced a partnership with action-camera maker GoPro to enable 360 degree view in virtual reality, using a new technology that Google had developed.

It said that its video-sharing site, YouTube supported virtual reality video in November as viewers could view VR video using a cell phone and Google Cardboard viewer.

The statement said that Oculus, the virtual reality company Face book bought in 2014, had started accepting pre-orders for its much-awaited virtual reality headset, Rift, which would ship in Q1.
