The Gombe State government has commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for shaping the minds of youths and promoting patriotism.

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, gave the commendation on Tuesday while declaring open the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream II Orientation exercise at the temporary orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.

Represented by his commissioner of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Inuwa Ibrahim, Yahaya said the scheme had helped in re-orientating the youth of the country towards having a mindset of service to their fatherland.

He said the various programs of the scheme over the years had contributed in instilling the spirit of patriotism, peaceful coexistence, tolerance and the unity of the nation.

“I commend the NYSC for bringing programs that have helped in instilling the spirit of patriotism, loyalty and selfless service as well as entrepreneurship spirit in our youths in the course of the service year.

“This has helped in raising patriotic youths who are self-reliant and innovative,” he said.

The governor urged corps members to see their deployment to the state as a noble call to serve the nation and to rededicate themselves to achieving the core mandate of national unity.

According to him, the corps members have a great role to play in bringing development to the country towards building a better society with a sustainable future.

“Endeavour to promote peaceful co-existence despite cultural, religious and socio-ethnic background in order to promote the integrity of our nation as one united and indivisible entity,” the governor said.

On his part, Mr Dawut Jidda, the state NYSC Coordinator, urged the corps members to ensure full participation in the four cardinal programs of the scheme, stressing that the programs were compulsory.

“The orientation course which you are currently undergoing is regimented, comprising physical training, intellectual/motivational lectures, sporting activities, social activities and skill acquisition and entrepreneurship.

“You will also participate in healthy competitions to enable you imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship.

“You will be co-opted into the administrative operations of the orientation to further enhance the desired leadership and citizenship skills required of you.

“All these activities and programs are aimed at preparing you to contribute to national development as well as gear you towards self-reliance and independence,” Jidda said.

While assuring the 1847 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members posted to the state of a hitch-free exercise at the camp, the state coordinator urged them to be security conscious and report suspicious acts to relevant authorities at the camp.

He commended the state government, security personnel and other stakeholders for their support in making the orientation course a success over the years.
