The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday restated its determination to ensure that motorists in the country imbibed better driving habits.
The Unit Commander of FRSC in Onitsha, Mr Paulinus Akpotobo, said this during a capacity-building workshop organised for members of staff of the Metallurgical Training Institute (MTI), Onitsha, Anambra State.
Akpotobo said that the commission was working hard to reduce road traffic crashes on the highways and other major roads across the country.
He stressed the need for motorists to adhere to the issues of speeding and expired or used tyres, besides other traffic violations.
“The commission is willing to assist and cooperate with organisations and government agencies on building capacity of their staff as part of efforts to ensure sanity on roads,” he said.
Presenting a paper on Speed Limit Device, Mr Chinedu Udora, a consultant on speed limit device and Chairman of CNET Technology Ltd., said that about 33 per cent of road accidents were due to speeding.
Udora, said that available statistics showed that no fewer than 800 persons lost their lives in February alone to speeding.
He advised travellers to insist on travelling only in vehicles kitted with speed limiters.
He said that the device helped in ensuring disciplined driving, low fuel consumption, reduction of accidents and improvement of life span of vehicles and tyres.
In another paper on traffic laws, the Unit’s Intelligence Officer, Mr Charles Nnamani, said that road safety laws were not aimed at punishing motorists.
He said the laws were for the restoration of sanity on roads, and urged drivers to obtain copy of the Highway Code and study it for enlightenment on traffic rules.
