The Ladies Golf Section of the IBB International Golf and Country Club has urged mothers who are career women to dedicate more time to the development of their children.
Mrs Comfort Olateju, Lady Captain, IBB Golf Club, gave the advice at the Children’s Day celebration organised by group for more than 200 children in Abuja.
She said that it was important for parents, especially mothers to maintain a balance in their work and family lives if they want their children to grow to be responsible and successful adults.
“Women are expected to play a critical role in the training of their children, attend to their children physical, emotional and mental needs.
“They are to ensure that their entire household is also catered for.
“Though these responsibilities can be draining, especially for those who do not have assistance, but it is a necessary sacrifice they need to make for the sake of their children,” she said.
On why the group decided to celebrate the day with children, Olateju added that the group was committed to nurturing young minds and shaping future leaders.
“We believe that by instilling values of generosity, compassion and leadership in our children, we pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.
“Giving, loving and leading are all the cornerstones of humanity, love knows no boundaries and is not bound by age, race or background.
“Authentic leadership lies in our ability to inspire, motivate and guide those around us.
“As adults, it is our responsibility to lead by example, mentor our children and help them discover their unique talents and strengths,” she said.
Also Dame Julie Donli-Okoh, Former Director-General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) added that parents should not leave the upbringing of their children to the teachers alone.
“Children’s upbringing are the primary responsibility of the parents, not the teachers in the school or the government.
“I want to appeal to parents who are absent minded to make it a priority to have time and get to know their children more, provide for them, protect and take care of their needs,” she added.
Ms Tracy Okoro, a member of the club, said that the children’s day celebration creates an opportunity for parents to spend more time with their children, as such it is important for parents to make use of the opportunity.
She added that the club decided to organize the funfair for the children to make the children feel special on their day and to teach them the techniques of playing golf.
The event which had more than 200 children in attendance, has as theme “Giving, Loving and Leading”.
