An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a bus conductor, Yusuf Oghenero, 23, of no fixed address, to one month in prison for stealing a cell phone worth N53,000.

Senior Magistrate Simisola Adeniyi handed down the judgment without an option of fine.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor David Udeh had told the court that one Cpl. Friday Ogwu and his team arrested the convict at a black spot in Wuse 2, Abuja on April 26.

Udeh said after the arrest, the officers discovered a black berry cell phone belonging to one Miss Christiana Okpetu with the convict.

“The convict stole the black berry phone worth N53,000 from Okpetu at the Berger junction in Wuse, Abuja on April 25.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code.

Section 287 stipulates that whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or with both.

Oghenero, who pleaded guilty to the charge, begged the court for mercy.

“ I am sorry for committing the offence, I promise not to commit such an offence again,’’ he lamented.
