Dr Lawan Gana, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services in Yobe, says Gov. Mai Mala Buni has fulfilled his campaign promises in the health sector.

Gana stated this in an interview in Damaturu.

“Governor Buni had largely fulfilled the promise he made during the inaugural speech of establishing at least one standard and functional Primary Healthcare Centers (PHC) in each of our 178 political wards.

“Till date, more than 78 per cent of Ward Focal PHC Centers have been rehabilitated and upgraded to the standard guidelines of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA),” Gana said.

The projects, according to him, comprised upgrade of the main facilities, perimeter wall fencing, gate house, staff accommodation, water supply and electrification.

The commissioner added that the construction and rehabilitation of the health facilities had motivated and improved primary health care staff performance and availability at all times in the facilities.

“Community health seeking behaviours particularly among women and children have also dramatically increased, and dropout rate of scheduled services has reduced to the barest minimum,” he said.

Gana also explained that strengthened primary healthcare system is key to attaining Universal Health Coverage and achieving health related Sustainable Development Goals.

He said the implementation of Primary Health Care Under One Roof (PHCUOR) which ensured full coordination and operation of PHC services was in the state.

According to him, the recent score card shared on PHCUOR implementation in the country has placed Yobe first in the country with aggregate score of 97 per cent.

The commissioner also noted that Buni’s administration  recorded other massive achievements in the state’s health sector.

“Similarly, secondary and tertiary health care provision in the state have been strengthened.

“Buni had upgraded eight PHC centers to General Hospitals” he said.

He also cited the establishment of four specialist hospitals across the senatorial districts of the state among others.
