Double Olympic 100m champion Usain Bolt said he was “race rusty” as he kicked off his season by running 10.05 seconds at the Cayman Invitational.
“Just like last season, I need more races to get sharp. So I’m not worried, just about working up to the top now,” said the 29-year-old Jamaican.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, American Justin Gatlin ran his first sub-10 second 100m of the year to win the Diamond League in Shanghai.
The 34-year-old, who ran the five fastest times in 2015, but lost to Bolt in the World Championship final, won the China race in 9.94 seconds.
In the 800m in Shanghai, Olympic champion and world record-holder David Rudisha was fifth behind fellow Kenyan Ferguson Rotich, who won in 1:45.68.
Rudisha led at the 600m stage but was beaten to the line by three compatriots, plus fourth-placed Thijmen Kupers of the Netherlands, with Britain’s Michael Rimmer ninth in 1:47.44.
World and Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica pulled out ahead of the meeting with “a small toe injury”.
