It was a bloody day in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State on Tuesday as armed robbers killed four policemen and 11 others during attacks on a police station and a first generation bank.
In coordinated attacks, the robbers, dressed in anti-riot mobile police uniform, stormed the town in two military vehicles, stationed themselves strategically beside the station and bank before commencing the operation.
The four policemen were killed at the station along Owo Road while trying to mobilise to counter the offensive.
Ten people, including a popular commercial transporter, were killed at the bank premises along Jubilee Road. While escaping, a vehicle was snatched and the driver killed.
On sighting the corpses of the policemen, their colleagues ran away. At the bank, some customers using the ATM machine, according to one of them who escaped, were sprayed with bullets. They died instantly. Others were killed inside the bank when the robbers used dynamites and grenades.
Cash, suspected to be in the range of millions of naira, was carted away.
