Former spokesman of the West African Football Union (WAFU), Mr. Austin Akosa, has died in Lagos.
The news was broken by his brother, Chuka.
He said the former President of the Nigeria Coaches Association, popularly known as `Suzy,’ died on Saturday, January 16, 2016, after a brief ill-health.
Born in 1941, Akosa retired from the National Sports Commission (NSC), where he had served on many National federations as organizing secretary, including the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) during the Nigeria/Biafra Civil War.
He also served in the Nigeria Lawn Tennis Association (NLTA) in 1974 as well as the Nigeria Table Tennis Association (NTTA).
Akosa was at one time on the board of the Nigeria Football Association in his capacity as President of the coaches association. He served as match commissioner in top soccer engagements across the African continent.
Akosa attended the Holy Cross Primary School, St Gregory College, Obalende, Lagos and the Ashridge College, London for a higher education. He was one of the pioneer students of the Nigeria Institute for Sports (NiSports).
He was a member of the Yoruba Tennis Club. He was renowned for his role at the first edition of the African Women’s Championship in Kaduna and Abeokuta and the Nigeria 99 FIFA World Youth Championship where he oversee the Protocol Department of the Lagos Sub Seat.
The family will, in due course, announce a burial plan.
