The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, has advised faith-based universities not to trivialise the critical roles they can play in driving the desired moral revolution that is in short supply in public institutions.
The first class monarch gave the advice on Tuesday in his palace in Oyo at a reception organised for the Proprietor of Crescent University, Prince Bola Ajibola.
He noted that all the moral decay, integrity problems, corruption and lack of trust can be traced to a dysfunctional and broken educational system that has jettisoned the pursuit of moral and ethical values.
“I am aware that Crescent University is a faith-based one established by the Islamic mission for Africa in 2005. The vision of the university is impressive and capable of transforming lives in our society and your mission to ensure the delivery of University education in ways that recognise personal discipline and integrity, as well as promote positive societal values, are well conceived”.
The paramount ruler, who is also the Chancellor of the university, said his thoughts are on how the institution, leadership can mobilize available resources available in Oyo/Yoruba philosophical and intellectual traditions to achieve lofty objectives.
These, according to him, include study of Yoruba history and culture as a source of knowledge, understand the evolution of Yoruba traditions, such as state formation, leadership, management and administration, inter-personal relations, pattern of social relation, community service, thrift and entrepreneurship, commerce and trade, education and intellectualism.
Others are study and understand the cultural milieu of Yoruba
environment and the social orientation of students and staff before applying foreign prescriptions to culturally defined problems.
Oba Adeyemi further suggested the application of diplomacy in management and focus on the goals, vision and mission of the university, not allowing any distractions from any quarters.
Said he, “ Oyo built a model of government which met the needs of the
time by being definite in allocating duties and roles to every
institution, organ or official of state administration, with
constitutionally defined roles and duties. Your institution should
develop a model of administration that will unambiguously define
respective roles and allocate responsibilities and powers to organs
and officers.
Earlier, the university’s proprietor, represented by his son, Mr.
Moroof Adesegun Ajibola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), described the Alaafin as an “enigma, lover of peace, detribalized monarch par excellence, whose contributions to growth and advancement of humanity remain a source of inspiration”.
