A Yola High Court has granted an interim order restraining the former Secretary to the Adamawa Emirate Council from selling, transferring, disposing and alienating six developed landed property and a large plot of land located in some wards in Yola town.
The court order is sequel to a suit filed by the Adamawa Emirate Council claiming the sum of N276.2 million from Alhaji Umar Yahaya who was the immediate past secretary to the council and another.
The suit, which is pending before the Adamawa State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Nathan Musa, has restrained the defendants and another from tempering with the developed landed properties three of which are located at Digol Ward in Yola town, two developed landed properties at Mbamoi ward, in Yola town, a large plot of land situated at Federal Housing estate, near Silver Hotel at Bajabure as well as developed landed property at Yolde Pate, near prison Barracks all in Yola town.
A press statement by counsel to the plaintiff, Onyi Ukaegbu, however explained that the interim order is pending the hearing of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.
It could be recalled that the Adamawa Emirate Council discovered that the suspended secretary, Mallam Umaru Yahya, is a serving Assistant Superintendent of Police, and was also claiming to be a staff of the Yola South Local Government Legislative Council.
The Assistant Secretary of the council, Alhaji Khalil M. Kawu, who disclosed this at a press briefing at the Lamido’s palace, said the recent discovery was made through a radio signal from the police headquarters inviting Yahaya for a promotional examination in Kaduna.
With this development, Kawu said the suspended secretary was collecting double salary, considered to be at variance with the civil service law, adding: “It was nemesis that led to the uncovering of such a smart and dubious character” and described Yahaya as an undercover police spy attached to the Emirate Council.
When contacted on the issue, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Muhammad Ibrahim, confirmed that it is true the suspended secretary is a police spy.
Ibrahim said it was during the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Abubakar Ringim when he served as commissioner of police in the command that some police spies were engaged and Umaru Yahaya was among them.
In a similar development, no fewer than 39 prison inmates of Yola prison regained their freedom.
Discharging the 39 inmates who have served for various years at the Yola prison, the Adamawa State Acting Chief judge, Justice Nathan Musa, who led the amnesty committee, advised the discharged inmates to see themselves as reformed people that can contribute positively to the development of the state.
Justice Nathan explained that the exercise to release some of the inmates is aimed at decongesting the prison so as to improve on the sanitary condition of the prison and told the inmates to consider the gesture as a great opportunity for them to engage themselves in meaningful jobs to make a leaving.
The Acting Chief Judge also charged members of the public not to victimise the discharged inmates but should be accommodated and be assisted to become better citizens of the society.
Speaking earlier, the Deputy Comptroller of Prison in Yola, Mallam Aminu Sule, who expressed appreciation to the amnesty committee, congratulated the discharged inmates for gaining their freedom and charged them to desist in any acts capable of taking them back to prison.
