New 100 and 200 Euro notes are to go into circulation effect from May 28, 2019, the European Central Bank (ECB) said on Monday.
The notes are to be shown to the public for the first time at the ECB headquarters in Frankfurt later that day.
The new notes are intended to be more difficult to forge. The ECB has already released improved notes in the denominations of five, 10, 20 and 50 euros.
The 500-euro note is no longer being produced.
Banks and the retail sector are expected to prepare staff for the introduction of the new notes.
The older notes will remain legal tender but will gradually be withdrawn from circulation.
