The Liberia goalkeeper, who accidentally walked into a glass door in a hotel lobby and damaged his right eye, has retired from football at age 24.
Nathaniel Sherman can’t see out of the eye.
The incident in Monrovia happened on September 3, two days before a 2017 African Cup qualifier he was expected to start but missed.
He was flown to India for surgery which failed to recover his sight.

He said it’s been hard not playing football, and realizing he never will play for Liberia again.

“I used to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to get ready for training, but now I can’t,” he said. “I now find myself in a new environment and I am trying to adapt. It’s been difficult for me.”

He is studying civil engineering and sociology at the University of Liberia.
