Barewa Rugby Football Club of Kano has been crowned Northern League champions for the first time since 2011, following a 44-0 win over city rivals Kano Scorpions last Saturday.
With the title race going down to the final round of the season, Barewa headed into the game knowing they needed a win and bonus point regardless of the outcome of the match between title rivals Zaria RFC and Jos RFC.
There were only two league defeats on Barewa which proved to be a vital early season wake up call to the squad as they did go on to win 8 games to clinch the title. The team will battle the winners of South-West League and South South/East League at the Super League Championship to determine Nigeria’s National Rugby Union League winner.
Zaria RFC beat Jos RFC 45-11 at home whilst Kaduna RFC recorded a 14-0 victory over local rivals; Sabongari RFC on the road.
