Lagos PDP: Aeroland ‘a drowning man’ – Dr Seye O’Dairo

Williams Shakespeare once said "Heat not a furnace for your foe so hot that it do singe yourself". It is evident and obvious that Segun Adewale and his cohorts have burnt their political career in the attempt to disparage the structures of the party by taking some elders to court. I am not a lawyer but coming out from a family of lawyers, I believe the suit filed is still res sub judice, meaning it's still pending and not sub judice which is before any court of law. So, as I write now, it's not assigned to any court . Be that as it may, Mr Segun Adewale and some few Lagos for Lagos Assembly candidates went so low and took the party structure to court because the list of the names written as defendants are the party structure in Lagos. No individual or group on the list is not currently holding or has held party position as we speak. So, it's the party structure from national to state that is taken to court. This is quite laughable because they've just given lawyers free meal because the suit filed by this group of dissidents is nothing but hogwash fit for LAWMA waste truck straight to Olusosun dump site. Looking at the list of the strange bedfellow plaintiffs. When a lone ranger senatorial candidate could only gather few House of Assembly candidates of that meager number and lied that the entire PDP candidates are also part of the plaintiffs shows the level of his reasoning. I know that respected and groomed senatorial candidates, House of Representatives and other assembly will never be part of such absurdity. I wont be surprised if I see a rejoinder from them. No sensible person will want Segun Adewale to tag him or her to such unwarranted...

PCA @ 60: The man and his niche in life, by...

Alexander Pope, the English poet known for his satirical and moralising verse, is quoted to have said: “Know then thyself, presume not God to scan: the proper study of mankind is man.” Pope’s position, which eternally resonates in human consciousness, is that man should not try to scan the ways of God, for the mysteries of God are beyond the human intellect. Man, therefore, should limit himself to his own study, a curious paradox. Interestingly, the attempt to limit man to his own study has not really helped the process of proper deconstruction of mankind, as man always gets trapped in the conundrum of subjective rather than objective study of himself (read another man). This is not surprising because the study of man naturally and always presents a kaleidoscope of traits that form his quintessence and offers varied perspectives as observed by others. The study of mankind by man, when likened to the perception of blind men about an elephant, would be influenced by the trait or feature that he is exposed to. A blind man who touches or feels the tusk of the elephant would describe it differently from the one who touches the trunk, and another who touches the leg. The same process applies to the appreciation of the character of a man. I have decided on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the immediate past Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba (PCA), to take this route, instead of the routine, predictable and certainly jaded style of paying tributes to birthday celebrators by talking about the schools attended, positions held and achievements, if there are any, and so on and so forth. My task today is to deconstruct the individuality of PCA within the context of how our paths crossed, leading to an...

Ningi threatens Akpabio, says ‘reinstate me in seven days or…’

Suspended Senator representing Bauchi Central District, Ahmed Ningi, has threatened the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. He said if the suspension placed on him is not lifted in seven days, he would sue Nigeria's Number Three citizen. He also vowed to report Akpabio to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC). Ningi, who wrote Akpabio through his lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), threatened to take Akpabio before the Federal High Court. The Senate, on March 12, suspended Ningi for three months over his claim that the 2024 Budget was padded to the tune of N3.7 trillion. After his suspension, he resigned as the Chairman of Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF) and was replaced by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (Katsina Central). Falana said in the letter: "Dissatisfied with the interview you caused our client to be put on trial before the Senate on March 14, 2024 contrary to the provisions of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2018, the Senate President acted as the accuser, prosecutor and judge in the case", saying this was in utter violation of the provisions of Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution. Falana argued that apart from violating Ningi’s fundamental right to a fair hearing, the Senate also violated the right of the people of the Bauchi Central Senatorial District to representation in the Senate for three months. “This is a breach of Section 111 of the Constitution and Article 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights Act,” the SAN said. “As you are no doubt aware, the Federal High Court had struck down the suspension of some members of the Senate and the House of Representatives who had accused the leadership of both houses of budget padding, corruption or abuse of office. “Specifically, the court declared the suspension of the affected legislators illegal and unconstitutional. “As a senior lawyer,...

SERAP Challenges Govt On Legal Frameworks That Promote Human Rights &...

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for the review of Official Secrets Act, Criminal Code Act, and Cybercrime Act in line with international human rights standards and agreements, just as it emphasized the necessity for the establishment of a legal framework that recognises and respects human rights. Dr Bunmi Afinowi, a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, said this at the presentation of a report titled: “State of Civic Space in Nigeria”, which she presented on behalf of SERAP in Lagos. The lecturer further called for the strengthening of the independence of regulatory bodies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) to ensure impartial regulation and promote self-regulation within the media. According to her, the recent decision of the Federal High Court on the powers of the NBC was a step in the right direction. She said that government should ensure a diverse representation in the NBC, the NPC, including journalist unions, civil society and academia. She said: “The judiciary has a role to play in this regard by ensuring that it upholds the rule of law and safeguards fundamental human rights as recognised and enshrined in the constitution. Bodies like the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigeria Union of Journalists and relevant civil society groups must ensure prompt and thorough investigations into the attacks on journalists and hold perpetrators accountable; "There is also a need for professional bodies and civil society groups to encourage coalitions and ensure adequate funding, capacity building and technical support for civil society organisations working on media freedom and human rights issues. “Federal and state governments should be tolerant of criticisms and perceived critical views expressed by Nigerians,” she said. The lawyer also said Nigerian government should prevail on law enforcement agencies to refrain from arbitrary arrests and...

Zelensky congratulates Ukrainian team for Euro 2024 qualification

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, and team officials have thanked the players of the war-torn country after it qualified for this summer’s European Championships. “Thank you, boys! Thank you, team. “If Ukrainians have a hard time but don’t give up and keep fighting, then Ukrainians will inevitably win,’’ Zelensky wrote on Telegram on Tuesday night. Zelensky spoke of significant emotions for the entire country. “In times, when the enemy tries to destroy us, we demonstrate everyday that Ukrainians are and will be. Ukraine is, and will be. Thank you for the victory. Glory to Ukraine,’’ he said. Ukraine qualified for Euro 2024 with a 2-1 comeback victory against Iceland on Tuesday, with Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk getting the 84th-minute winner. They will play in Group E against Romania, Slovakia and Belgium at the June 14 to July14 event in Germany. Ukraine missed the 2022 World Cup due to a play-off defeat. The play-off final took place in the Polish city of Wroclaw as the national teams and clubs from Ukraine could not play at home since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. Ukrainian football federation chief Andriy Shevchenko, a former world-class striker, told the team in the dressing room: “As the people who are defending Ukraine on the front line, you have given them a little piece of luck. “Thank you very much for that. You are magnificent guys,’’ Shevchenko said. Coach Serhiy Rebrov said: “Everyone understands how important this win is. “We said both before and after the games that these victories are for our country, our people and the defenders of our freedom".
